Our Mission

Patti Rooks Sewing Studio is dedicated to creating distinctive, sustainable fashion through the art of upcycling. Patti Rooks Sewing Studio demonstrates that fashion can be both environmentally responsible and personally meaningful.

About me

I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas where I started sewing at a very young age of 9 or 10 0n my mother's treadle sewing machine. Not because they didn't make electric sewing machines back then but because that's all we could afford at the time. I started experimenting with scraps of fabric and made my very first poorly constructed skirt that I was so proud of. I mainly self-taught myself over the years. With lots of mistakes and lots of do overs. I'm still learning and still making mistakes. My seam ripper is still my best friend.

Skip ahead to 2000 when I met my husband. I was a single mom of one bio daughter and one special needs adopted daughter. He was a cowboy that worked on his family ranch in Colorado. We married lived a few years in Colorado before I convinced him to move back to the beautiful state of Texas. He was kicking and screaming the whole way, but he came around.

My Journey

A few more years and we started the adventurous journey of foster care. Our big plan starting out was to adopt one little boy. That we did. But after seeing the need for foster parents we continued to foster. We wanted to take the ones that were hard to place and started taking teens, special needs and ones with behavioral issues. We fostered over 100 children in 14-year span and in that time, we adopted 19 children from foster care. With my bio daughter that gave us an even 20.

Our children were growing up and moving out on their own. So I went back and got my degree in my 50's so that I would be able to work in social work and I became a case manager in the child welfare field. A few years ago I found my love of sewing again mainly as a way of relaxing. I started doing sewing and alterations as a side hustle. I found joy in up cycling old clothing and linen. The Spring of 2025 I took the huge leap of faith and took early retirement and continued doing sewing and alterations as a part time side gig. But word of mouth has spread, and I am now doing it full time out of my home. I sell my upcycle clothing on several plat forms online as well as this web site. I also do custom orders. I do sewing and alterations for several dry cleaners in my area.

I am wife and Mother of 20 and grandmother of soon to be 11. But first and foremost, I'm a lover of Jesus Christ who has blessed me with this wonderful, hectic, crazy life. He has given me my hearts desires even though I didn't know what that was so many years ago.
